Maternity Photoshoot: Celebrating Your Pregnancy Journey

A maternity photoshoot is an opportunity to capture this unique moment in time. Whether you're looking for elegant studio portraits, relaxed family photographs, creative concepts, or images with your partner, the session can be tailored to reflect your personality and story.

Why Have a Maternity Photoshoot?

Pregnancy is one of life's most exciting milestones, but it's also a chapter that passes remarkably quickly. Between preparing for your baby's arrival, attending appointments and navigating the ups and downs of pregnancy, it can be easy to forget to pause and celebrate the journey itself.

There is no single way to approach maternity photography. Some people love flowing gowns and styled studio portraits, while others prefer natural family moments or simple images that focus on the connection between parent and baby. The beauty of a maternity session is that it can be whatever you want it to be.

When Should You Book a Maternity Photoshoot?

One of the most common questions I get asked is when to book a maternity photoshoot. While every pregnancy is different, many of my clients choose to schedule their session between 28 and 36 weeks.

At this stage, your bump is usually beautifully visible, but you're often still comfortable enough to move around, change outfits and enjoy the experience. Leaving it too close to your due date can sometimes mean you're feeling more tired, uncomfortable or simply ready for baby to arrive.

Of course, every pregnancy is unique, so the best time will always depend on how you're feeling and what you'd like from your images.

Preparing for Your Pregnancy Photoshoot

A little preparation can make a big difference on the day. Staying hydrated, bringing snacks and allowing time for regular breaks can help you feel comfortable throughout the session.

If you're planning to wear fitted outfits, lingerie-inspired looks or garments that reveal your bump, wearing loose clothing beforehand can help avoid marks on the skin. It's also worth bringing comfortable shoes and layers so you can easily adapt between different setups.

Most importantly, don't feel pressured to rush. Maternity sessions should be relaxed, enjoyable and tailored around your comfort, with plenty of opportunities to rest when needed.

Planning Your Maternity Photoshoot

If you have ideas you'd love to recreate, creating a Pinterest board beforehand can be incredibly helpful. Whether you're drawn to glamorous gowns, editorial-inspired portraits, candid family moments or something completely unique, sharing inspiration helps shape a session that feels personal to you.

You may want to include your partner, children or even pets, or perhaps you'd prefer the focus to be entirely on your changing body and pregnancy journey. There are no rules. The most meaningful images are often the ones that feel authentic to your experience.
