Photographing York Fashion Week 2025: Part 1

York Fashion Week has returned with a fresh line-up and new venues, and I’ve been back behind the camera capturing it all.

Breast Friends
Thursday evening started on a high with the return of the Breast Friends Runway at Browns. All the models are women who’ve experienced a breast cancer diagnosis, confidently walking the runway in Browns’ spring/summer fashion. There was fizz, there was fashion, and a lot of love in the room. Always a heartwarming show raising money for the fantastic charity.

Mannequin
Things kicked off with a bang (and a few jump scares) as real models took over York’s shop windows in a living installation inspired by the 80s cult classic Mannequin. Jigsaw, Master Debonair, Hobbs, Dog & Bone and Porters all took part. Every time I walked past, someone was double-taking – unsure if they were looking at a mannequin or a person. Brilliant, weird and very YFW.

The Indie Runway
Kicking off Friday night at the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall, the Indie Runway brought together a brilliant mix of independent designers. The energy backstage was buzzing – creativity everywhere, from conceptual looks to pieces that felt straight off the street. This show always delivers something unexpected and this year was no different.

Fling Fashion – The Trunk Show
Saturday lunchtime was all about rental. Fling Fashion hosted an intimate trunk show at 14 Feasegate, spotlighting event and bridal pieces you can hire rather than buy. There was a great Q&A with founder Chloé Mead – a really thoughtful insight into how the brand’s been built and how rental is shaping up as a real alternative in the fashion world.

YFW: The Expo
That evening, the same space transformed into a small but striking exhibition. It was a mix of new collections and throwbacks from previous YFW shows. It was good to slow down and get up close to the detail of the designs – something you miss when you’re dashing about shooting runway.

The Menswear Runway
Sunday night brought us to the Hooting Owl Distillery, where the Men’s Runway returned for its second season. A strong line-up with labels like Master Debonair, Dog & Bone Vintage, Barbour and Boss. Really well received – the crowd stayed around after to chat with designers and connect, which gave the whole event a solid community feel.

York Fashion Week never fails to surprise me. It’s stylish, yes – but it’s also heartfelt, fiercely local, and inclusive in a way the fashion industry should be. I’m endlessly proud to capture these moments, to work alongside brilliant people, and to document the energy, elegance and pure bloody effort!
