Ophelia on 35mm Film

There’s something about shooting film that just hits different….The softness, the texture, the unpredictability. I’ve not shot on film since I was back in university, but I knew this fantasy shoot was going to be a gorgeous shoot to try my hand at film!

I took my little Canon EOS 600 along on the Ophelia shoot as a test. I knew I wanted to capture a different side of Erica’s story, something more intimate and a little rougher round the edges.

Shot on Kodak Portra 160, the film brought this hazy, dreamlike quality to the scenes. The colours are rich but gentle, the edges a little blurred, the moments unpolished but honest. Less editorial, more diary.

I had the colour film developed by Take It Easy Lab in Leeds, a brilliant local business. By supporting local independents, I can ensure sustainability with my carbon footprint and ensure I support my local creative community. We scanned the negatives at home, and I’ve only cropped into the images to remove any dust specs and border negatives.

These frames sit alongside the original digital editorial, adding another layer to Ophelia’s story. You can read the full blog and see the full shoot here.

Model: Erica, shot around the wilds of Ilkley West Yorkshire.
