The most picturesque time of year! Dig out those thick woolly jumpers, grab a pumpkin spiced latte and prepare yourself for these crisp, gorgeous mornings.
Whether you are looking for a family portrait session, updating your modelling portfolio or if you are another creative looking for some inspiration, here are some tips for the ultimate autumn photoshoot.
Amongst the leaves
Leaves are your friends this season! You can add movement and personality through your imagery by throwing them in the air and running through them, or throwing the leaves towards the camera. Alternatively, you could hold the leaves up to your face for a gorgeous colourful close up, or lay down surrounded by them for a beautiful portrait. For a self-portrait with some depth, you could even lay a mirror amongst some scattered leaves and shoot down into it.
Neon lights
Now the days seem to be getting shorter and the nights longer, there’s no better time to head into the city to take advantage of some of the neon lights! From experience, the best places are typically outside nightclubs or around Chinatown where there is lots of colour. You could even try your hand at light painting with a slow shutter or mixing it up with flash.
Halloween themed
Like anyone needs an excuse to get dressed up! Take inspiration from your favourite spooky character and interpret their style into your images. Think what location? Makeup? Costume? Do you want it to be exact, is it inspired or is it a fashionable twist of a classic favourite?
Pumpkin patch
Two birds with one stone…The ultimate Halloween and Autumn activity is visiting a pumpkin patch to choose your favourite pumpkins to carve. Make this outing more fun with some portraits amongst the pumpkins! Perfect for children or influencer-style images. I’d recommend wearing something that will stand out against the pumpkins – Something red or brown will add a warm autumnal tone to the images.
Coffee shop
Give those cosy and classic vibes with images in a coffee shop. I’d recommend a small independent one to avoid any Costa or Starbucks branding that could ruin the vibes. Find some reflections to shoot against. Shoot through glass, or use any paintings/neon signs in your surroundings. A coffee cup can also make the perfect prop and add some texture to your image. Have fun with it!
